Sea Kayak Multi-Day Touring Course Overview
Conditions - Moderate winds: (12-19 knots); moderate sea state (combined wind wave / swell up to 1-meter); Surf: up to 1-meter; Current up to 3 knots.
Knowledge - Seamanship and leadership as it relates to planning and executing a week long paddling trip. Understanding marine weather forecasts, navigation in more challenging environments with charts, compass. Tide / current tables and resources. Camp skills including tarp set-up, cooking and gear familiarization.
Paddling Skills - Forward stroke, reverse stroke, sweep strokes, draw strokes, edging and bracing. Brace turns, bow / stern rudders and draws in forward motion. Emphasis is on boat control in a variety of conditions including; wind waves, swell, surf and currents.
Rescue Skills - Assisted, Unassisted Recoveries and Rolling, Towing and Communication. Participants will practice a variety of re-entry methods with the emphasis on efficiency and control while acting as part of a peer group of paddlers.
Paddle Canada Level 3 - Sea Kayak Touring
Provides the opportunity to develop leadership, risk assessment, decision making, judgment, and general seamanship skills in the context of a multi-day journey in a more exposed coastal environment.
Successful participants will be given the Paddle Canada Level 3 Kayak certification
Location - Broken Group Islands
Prerequisites - Sea Kayak Touring Course or Paddle Canada Level-2 Skills
Course fees include - kayak and related equipment, camping, launching and Parks fees.
Additional fees not included - Food, travel expenses, carpooling will be arranged from White Rock.
